Why Does Hair Loss Happen?

Different Scalp conditions that affect hair growth through oxidative stress are
– Oxidizing scalp lipids
– UVR
– Smoking cigarettes or 2nd hand exposure
– Inflammation microbial, from pollutants or irritants

Causes for scalp pathology that causes hair loss:

  • Androgenic alopecia (related to hormones – women and men have a high level of 5 alpha reductase and convert Testosterone to DHT dihydro-testosterone)
  • Alopecia Areata (usually rare and hair falls out in patches – usually occurs at a young age)
  • Female pattern Hair loss – more common after age 40, has a diffuse presentation and less related to hormones)
  • Senile Alopecia (common with older age)
  • Tellogen Efluvium – is the most common cause of diffuse hair loss. It is a nonscarring, diffuse, hair loss from the scalp that occurs around 3 months after a triggering event and is usually self-limiting, lasting for about 6 month.
  • In TE hair loss is usually less than 50% of the scalp hair
    – It is a temporary disturbance of the hair follicle, that is unrelated to age
    – It is seen more frequent in women
    – Start date is usually noticeable
    – Hair loss is diffuse and across multiple areas
    – Hair that falls in present day likely detached 3 months ago
    – Treatment will generate results in 3-4 months

Typical TRIGGERS for Telogen Effluvium are:

  • COVID, H1N1
  • Childbirth, postpartum
  • Acute or chronic illness
  • Major surgery
  • Major trauma or an accident with emotional or physical trauma
  • Psychological stress
  • Severe weight loss, drastic change in diet and depletion of nutrients ex Iron or B vitamins
  • Medications
  • Hormonal issues – low or high THYROID, low Estrogen, high TESTOSTERONE metabolites like DHT
  • Skin diseases affecting the scalp
  • Excessive Sun exposure
  • Exposure to chemicals like hair dyes – possible allergic reactions
