How does ICON Hair Removal Work?

How do lasers safely remove hair?
When the Icon laser is set to a specific wavelength, the laser beam is selectively absorbed by colored pigments in the hair follicle. Since the laser only affects pigmented tissue, it can be used to treat the hair follicle without harming your skin. As laser energy is absorbed, the hair follicle is destroyed, which makes the existing hair fall out and stops future hair from growing. Using the Icon system, Dr. C. can remove hair on any type of skin and from any area of the body, including your face, arms, underarms, chest, legs, back, and bikini area.Efficient permanent hair removal
Why do you need more than one treatment?
Every hair on your body goes through growth cycles. Hair grows at the rate of about half an inch per month for about three to five years. Then the hair follicle, which anchors and nurtures each strand of hair, goes through a transitional stage before entering the third phase: the resting phase.
When a hair follicle reaches the resting phase, the strand of hair falls out and the follicle goes dormant. After about three months, the follicle begins another growth phase and a new hair appears.
Lasers can only destroy the follicle when it’s in a growth phase. Since each follicle on your body follows its own timing — hairs don’t all grow or go dormant at the same time — one laser treatment can’t eliminate all of the hair. It takes about three sessions to permanently eliminate 79% of the hair in the treated area.*
What should you expect during laser hair removal with the Icon?
The amount of time needed for the procedure depends on the area being treated. Many people tolerate laser hair removal without sensitivity, but you don’t need to worry about comfort because a numbing cream can be applied. Following treatment, your skin may look sunburned, and you may have slight swelling, but these resolve within a few days.
Can cosmetic treatments like scar removal be done at the same time as hair removal?
Yes, you can get multiple cosmetic treatments at the same time as laser hair removal. The Icon system is uniquely designed to accommodate different types of lasers. When hair removal is finished, Dr. C. can switch the laser hand piece to one that can:

- Diminish wrinkles
- Eliminate facial and leg veins
- Treat stretch marks
