What are hyaluronic acid fillers?
They are a synthetic form of a naturally occurring substance found in our tissues that is used to plump skin and replace bone structure that has lost volume. Used properly, fillers improve appearance and facial structure to take years off and correct cosmetic concerns. They can also be used on the back of hands that appear sunken with age because hyaluronic acid increases the treated area’s tissue volume by drawing in water – this this is the natural mechanism that creates the look of youthful skin.
How long do hyaluronic acid fillers last?
Fillers can last from six months to two years at full effect, although each manufacturer represents different timelines. Hyaluronic acid fillers have been found to last much longer in some patients – even up to 10 years! However, they normally slowly dissolve over time. The results are instant although with swelling (which is normal) you may not be able to see the outcome for a few days.
What else should I know about fillers?
You can get fillers based on a 15-minute consultation to make sure you are a good candidate and to determine which type(s) of filler should be used. Typically, we will only inject up to 1cc per visit. You will be given topical anesthesia prior to treatment and should use ice afterward. Bruising and swelling are normal. A follow-up visit a week later is ideal in case you need a “touch up” to perfect your look.
What if I don’t like my old filler?
If you want to get rid of your current filler we can take care of that too using a medication called hyaluronidase. That way you can remove whatever you dislike and begin fresh.
